Even despite the almost unbearable mid-July heat of south Louisiana, we had a beautiful weekend getaway experience at the Two Souls United in Christ retreat in Grand Coteau, growing closer to Jesus and our spouses. The highlight of the retreat for Sam and me was the Couples’ Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament on that second night. It was one of the most powerful experiences of conjugal spirituality we have ever had, and the fruit of the Holy Spirit was tangible. Followed by that unifying experience was an expected invitation to participate in the retreat center’s nightly ‘Lourdes Procession.’ We processed by candlelight to a huge replica of Massabielle – the Lourdes grotto – where we knelt in prayer and offered our own silent intentions to our Lord and our Lady together with many other retreatants there that weekend. It is difficult to put into words just how powerful these encounters in prayer were – especially entering into them as a community. We were also blessed to have our entire MCG in attendance on the retreat.
It was like the giant sleepover that one of our members has been begging for since we started our group 2 years ago! It was also a gift to be able to get to know so many new couples who were there with the same purpose: to pour into their marriages and deepen their relationship with God and one another. Theresa and Pete did a great job of including quick but fun games (with prizes!) to help us break the ice and get to know one another. There were also social gatherings in the evenings where we were able to simply enjoy one another’s company. The content of the talks throughout each day gave us all much food for thought, prayer, and discussion but in a setting that was open, vulnerable, and relaxed. We are grateful for the Martins who pour out so generously the graces they receive within their marriage onto all the couples who attend these retreats. Thanks to their openness and FIAT, the loop of graces continues!
